Quick Answer
LiveChat is the simpler first test when your main requirement is live customer conversation with a predictable per-user starting price. Intercom is the stronger first test when the support system needs a broader helpdesk, knowledge-base and AI-resolution model from one platform.
For a small business, the decision is not only “which chat widget is better?” The current products now overlap across live chat, inboxes, ticketing, AI and automation, but they package and charge for those capabilities differently.

Important Pricing Note: LiveChat.com Is in a Product/Pricing Transition
As of Oct 7, 2026, LiveChat.com's public pricing page promotes the newer Text plans for new buyers. The same site also maintains Help Center documentation for legacy LiveChat plans such as Starter, Team and Business. Existing LiveChat subscriptions may therefore see different plan names and entitlements from a new buyer.
This guide uses the current public new-buyer pricing shown on LiveChat.com for the main comparison: Essential at $19 per user/month billed annually ($25 monthly) and Growth at $79 per user/month billed annually ($99 monthly). Where legacy LiveChat plans are relevant, we call out the distinction rather than mixing both price structures.

Pricing and AI: Seat Cost Is Only Part of the Bill
LiveChat.com's current small-business page shows Essential at $19 per user/month when billed annually, or $25 monthly. Growth is $79 annually or $99 monthly. Essential currently lists 1 AI Agent and 10 AI resolutions; Growth lists 10 AI Agents and 200 AI resolutions, plus larger limits for live visitors, proactive campaigns and API calls.
Intercom's current pricing page lists Essential at $29 per seat/month billed annually, Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132. Fin AI Agent is priced from $0.99 per outcome. Intercom explains that an outcome is charged when a customer issue is resolved or the AI completes a workflow according to its billing rules.
This creates different cost behavior:
- LiveChat/Text: compare seat count and the AI-resolution allowance included in your selected plan.
- Intercom: compare seat count plus expected Fin outcomes and any usage-based channels or add-ons.
A business with two human agents but very high AI-resolution volume can have a different cost profile from a business with six agents and low automation volume. Build the estimate from your actual support volume.
Inbox and Channels
Both products now go beyond a simple website chat box.
The current LiveChat.com small-business offer describes Essential as including omnichannel support plus an inbox and ticketing system. It also lists Shopify selling features, proactive campaigns, API access and AI assistance.
Intercom says all current plans include unlimited live chat, inbound/support email, in-app chats, banners and tooltips. Essential also includes the Messenger, shared inbox, ticketing system, pre-built reports and a public help center.
If you only need website chat and a shared operator view, compare the simplest plan that satisfies the workflow. If support also needs a public knowledge base, in-app messaging, structured tickets and AI resolution, the broader support stack matters more than the widget alone.
Automation Depth
Automation is one of the clearest areas where plan structure matters.
LiveChat.com's current Essential small-business offer includes workflow automation and proactive campaigns. Growth expands campaign limits and adds team-oriented reporting and chat supervision/takeover capabilities.
Intercom Essential includes simple automation and Fin access, while the current Advanced plan explicitly adds the Workflows automation builder, multiple team inboxes and round-robin assignment.
For a small team, write down the exact automation required:
- What triggers the automation?
- Does it answer automatically, route to a human, create a ticket or update another system?
- Does the workflow need different rules by team, language, customer segment or business hours?
- What happens when the automation cannot resolve the issue?
Choose the lowest plan that handles the real workflow without forcing manual work back into the process.
Reporting and Team Scale
LiveChat.com's current Growth offer adds team performance reports, chat-topic insights, chat supervision/takeover and higher visitor/campaign/API limits. That makes it materially different from the entry Essential tier for a staffed support operation.
Intercom's Advanced and Expert tiers are designed for more complex support organizations. Advanced adds custom/stronger team-management and workflow capabilities; Expert adds enterprise-oriented features such as SSO, identity management, SLAs and multibrand Messenger/help-center support.
Do not buy enterprise controls before the team needs them. A two-person support team should first measure queue volume, response time, unresolved conversations, handoffs and AI-resolution quality.
Three Small-Business Scenarios
1. One to three people handling website questions and sales leads
LiveChat/Text Essential is a natural first test because the entry annual price is lower and the plan already includes chat/inbox/ticketing plus a small AI allowance. Intercom Essential is worth the higher starting seat price when its help-center and broader support-platform capabilities are already part of the requirement.
2. A growing support team that needs routing, knowledge base and AI
Intercom becomes more compelling when workflows, team inboxes, help-center depth and Fin AI outcomes are central. LiveChat/Text Growth is worth testing if chat operations, proactive engagement and predictable team features are the main need.
3. E-commerce support with a strong website-chat focus
LiveChat.com's current Essential page explicitly includes Shopify selling features. That makes it a relevant first test for a small store whose support workflow starts on the storefront. Compare Intercom if the store also needs a broader help-center and AI-resolution system across support channels.
A 7-Day LiveChat vs Intercom Test
- Use the same support window. Route a defined set of website conversations through each test.
- Track first-response time. Separate human and AI-assisted responses.
- Track resolution. Count solved, escalated and reopened conversations.
- Track operator effort. Measure minutes spent per conversation and on setup/maintenance.
- Test one automation. Use the same routing or FAQ-resolution scenario.
- Record cost drivers. Seats, AI resolutions/outcomes, add-ons and paid channels.
- Review customer experience. Check whether the workflow makes it easier to reach a human when automation fails.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is LiveChat cheaper than Intercom?
The current LiveChat.com new-buyer entry plan starts lower: $19/user/month annually for Essential versus $29/seat/month annually for Intercom Essential. Total cost can still change with team size, AI usage, add-ons and messaging channels.
Why do I see different LiveChat plan names online?
LiveChat.com is currently promoting newer Text pricing for new buyers, while its Help Center still documents legacy LiveChat Starter, Team and Business plans. Existing customers may therefore see different plan names and entitlements.
Does Intercom charge extra for AI?
Yes. Fin AI Agent is currently priced from $0.99 per outcome, in addition to the seat-based Intercom plan when you buy Fin and Intercom together.
Does LiveChat include AI?
The current LiveChat.com small-business Essential offer includes 1 AI Agent and 10 AI resolutions; Growth includes a larger allowance. Verify the live pricing page because limits can change.
Which is better for a very small team?
LiveChat/Text is the more natural first test when the requirement is primarily chat/inbox support and entry seat price matters. Intercom is worth the higher starting price when the small team already needs its broader helpdesk, public help center or Fin AI model.
Bottom Line
Start with LiveChat/Text when the business is chat-first and wants a lower published entry seat price. Start with Intercom when the requirement is a broader AI-first customer-service platform with help center, ticketing and deeper workflow operations.
Run the same seven-day support workload before deciding. The correct platform is the one that resolves the same customer issues with acceptable cost, clear escalation and manageable operator effort.
